(16 sep. 1926, Fairmont, W.V., EE.UU.–29 nov. 2001, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).

Autor estadounidense. Educado en la Universidad de Yale, Knowles destacó con su primera novela, A Separate Peace [Una paz separada] (1959), centrada en la amistad competitiva de dos estudiantes de colegios privados. La mayoría de sus obras, que incluyen Indian Summer [Veranillo de San Martín] (1966), Spreading Fires [Fuegos que se propagan] (1974) y Peace Breaks Out [Estalla la paz] (1981), son estudios psicológicos de personajes atrapados en el conflicto entre las facetas violentas y pragmáticas de su personalidad.
